Using Second Life to prototype real world urban development in Boston
I previously blogged about the interesting work that Gene Koo and Eric Gordon are doing in Boston using Second Life to empower local community leaders. Next Tuesday, August 19, Gene and Eric will present the progress of their project, called "Hub2", an initiative that "gives local neighborhoods a more powerful voice in urban planning and public design." Here's a fuller description: Residents engage in a process that employs 3D virtual tools and problem-solving techniques to articulate a co
Streaming Diplomats: the challenges of working with real and virtual teens and adults
Today I helped organize a pretty successful mixed-reality Global Kids event, featuring Dr. Francis Deng, the UN Special Representative on Genocide, speaking about Darfur and the UN's response to situations like these. The Online Leadership Program of Global Kids, which I'm a part of, is making concerted efforts to coordinate our work more closely with other Global Kids' programs that focus on New York teens. While Second Lifers know about Global Kids as being innovators in virtual world educ
Talk on stopping the genocide in Darfur with UN Rep today at Intl Justice Center in Second Life
Today at 12PM PST, the International Justice Center will be streaming into Second Life a conversation on the situation in Darfur with Dr. Francis Deng, the UN Secretary Generals’ Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide. Dr. Deng is a remarkable individual: a Sudanese national who has served as a human rights officer at the United Nations since the 1960s as well as his own country as Minister of Foreign Affairs and ambassador to several countries. After Dr. Deng's short speech, Global K
Congrats to Native Lands, Ability Commons and Texas Obesity Center for Winning USC Public Good Awards!
Congratulations to Native Lands, the Ability Commons and the Texas Obesity Research Center for winning the USC Public Good Community Challenge! Eech group is being awarded L$300,000 and a plot of land each to develop their projects in Second Life. These three projects bring such important concerns to the table -- Native American heritage preservation, emotional support for people with disabilities, and education about the problem of obesity. I'm looking forward to seeing how their projects d
Closing shop on Yehoodi's Second Life office in the Nonprofit Commons
I've decided that I don't have the time or energy to devote to building out Yehoodi's in-world presence in Second Life anymore. I do believe there are interesting ways that virtual worlds could be used to promote lindy hop and swing jazz. I would still love to host in-world interviews with jazz artists and dancers, throw vintage themed dance parties, stream in real-world lindy hop events, and sponsor the creation of authentic jazz dance animations. But I have to admit to myself that I am t
Second Life’s NonProfit Presence: We are making a difference!
Our wonderful leader Cotton (one of them anyway) found a site both online and in-world called NonProfits in Second Life , Nonprofit Commons, which promotes nonprofit activity in Second Life. This is a new project and we are working on partnering with them to help us promote SL Peacefest 08. Plush Nonprofit Commons One thing we do have now, which is linked to their site, is a wiki space, which is a membership site allowing ongoing discussions about the projects. Please take a couple minutes to
Is Dubya secretly an online gamer? Nah, I'm kidding.
This week, someone with a "sociologist" tag logged into Second Life and teleported to my daughter's virtual coffee house to check out Open Mic Night for live musicians. It's interesting to note how someone would announce so publicly that he was there for research. I felt a little under the microscope, but after the first performer started to strum his guitar and sing over the streaming audio

Video: Rik on Metanomics Show yesterday
For those interested in seeing me speak on the USC Public Good in SL Community Challenge yesterday on the Metanomics Talk Show in Second Life, SLCN.tv has released a quicktime video of the entire show. It's kind of a long download, so I recommend cueing it up and fast-forwarding to around the half-way point to cut to the chase. The rest of the show is really interesting as well, touching in intellectual property issues in virtual worlds, hacker and gamer cul

Drupal Basics -- Adding an Events Calendar
Drupal Basics -- Adding an Events Calendar Submitted by matthew on Tue, 2008-06-10 22:28. Tags: basics drupal nonprofits in second life NPSL NPT Adding an events calendar to a Drupal instance is pretty easy thanks to Kjartan Mannes who authored the Event module and Gerhard Killesreiter who maintains it. I was asked if I would add a Calendar to the Nonprofit Commons site--dedicated to nonprofits in Second Life--to aid in booking space across the two sims. We often have events, and sometimes
"Second Life and the Public Good Community Challenge" : awesome submissions!
I just finished doing a first read-through of the submitted proposals for the USC Network Culture Project's "Second Life and Public Good Community Challenge". There's a rich assortment of innovative projects on the table, all of which are worthy of support in their own right. Winnowing it down to just five is going to be quite a task for the selection committee, I can see already. Of the topics of the proposals, I can see some emerging themes. Several were health-related, assisting people w
2 jobs available for community development project in Boston using Second Life
Gene Koo of the Berkman Center at Harvard wanted me to pass around these job notices for an innovative project called "Hub2": "Hub2 seeks to enable local neighborhoods to participate more meaningfully in the design and development of their own public spaces. Residents engage in a process that employs 3D tools and problem-solving techniques to articulate a common vision reflecting the participants’ values. Over the next 3 months, Hub2 will work with Allston residents and stakeholders, the

The Milwaukee Wave Don't Have a League
Growing up in a "soccer family", I guess you could say, we made the trip down to Milwaukee for many Milwaukee Wave games. It was cheap entertainment, and was always a good time. I've always loved the fast pace of indoor soccer, not just as a fan but also as a player, and a Wave game was always a good time. Some of the highlights for me were attending the game the year they won championship, the pre-game camp I went to, and the game Brett Favre attended. But as the Wave approaches their 25th sea
What would virtual world non-profit collaboration look like?
I’ve been thinking about how virtual worlds might fit into the work life of an advocacy-focused non-profit in a meaningful way. Here’s one scenario I dreamed up that isn’t science-fiction -- it can basically be implemented today with current technology. Hopefully it might help some advocacy groups imagine the potential for virtual worlds to enhance their work, capitalizing on the unique affordances of these digital spaces. Enjoy the virtual world nerdiness... Han Lee, advocacy coordinator
